BIRDING Bird Island was joined to the mainland by a breakwater in 1959 and is now the most accessible of the marine bird breeding islands off the West Coast. Although the main breeding areas are fenced off from the public to prevent undue disturbance, it is still possible to get close to the birds. Approximately 5 000 pairs of Cape gannets breed here in the spring and summer months, and many thousands of Cape cormorants can be seen throughout the year. There is also a small jackass penguin colony, and a small number of the rare bank cormorant breed here. The area receives low rainfall. Fog is a common occurrence in the area, but it usually clears by mid-morning. Location: West Coast; west of Clanwilliam. Access: From Clanwilliam take the R364 westwards for 62 km to Lambert's Bay. Bird Island lies next to the fishing harbour, and is clearly signposted. Accommodation: None. Lambert's Bay has a large camping site with ablution facilities, and a hotel. Other facilities: Bird-watching hide. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
