Although the main breeding areas are fenced off from the public to prevent undue disturbance, it is still possible to get close to the birds. Approximately 5 000 pairs of Cape gannets breed here in the spring and summer months, and many thousands of Cape cormorants can be seen throughout the year. There is also a small jackass penguin colony, and a small number of the rare bank cormorant breed here. The area receives low rainfall. Fog is a common occurrence in the area, but it usually clears by mid-morning. Location: West Coast; west of Clanwilliam. Access: From Clanwilliam take the R364 westwards for 62 km to Lambert's Bay. Bird Island lies next to the fishing harbour, and is clearly signposted. Accommodation: None. Lambert's Bay has a large camping site with ablution facilities, and a hotel. Other facilities: Bird-watching hide. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset. |
